Have an Over-the-Top Vacay in Overland Park

Michael Moore • January 9, 2025

This Kansas City suburb is the perfect spot for a getaway for groups large or small

Kansas City is a US city on the rise. It’s home to Taylor’s boyfriend (Go Chiefs!), a gentrifying downtown area, delicious barbecue, Hallmark’s headquarters and world-class entertainment venues. Its central location in the US means it’s easily accessible by visitors from either coast, and the affordability of the city makes it a great place to call home. If you haven’t been to Missouri in a while, consider this your sign.

Right to the west of Kansas City, on the Kansas side of the state line, sits Overland Park, a sought-after suburban KC community. Overflowing with kid-friendly entertainment spots, mouth-wateringly delicious local restaurants, top-notch kids sports venues and more, Overland Park is a place you’ll want to return to again and again. If you’re searching for a vacation spot in the good old Midwest, look no further than Overland Park, Kansas.

Five fun activities not to be missed in Overland Park

  • Take a stroll through the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Free admission is offered on the first Tuesday of every month, and visitors will enjoy wandering through 13 gorgeous gardens that will certainly impress. Even kids will enjoy this serene spot, where the train garden has an old caboose they can climb on as well as a miniature old town they can explore.
  • Step back in time at the Johnson County Museum & Kidscape. Explore the 1950s-era all-electric house and let the kids run wild at the playscape that enables them to learn while they play. Check the website for free days or pay a nominal fee to support and visit the museum. They also have roving exhibits that will help visitors learn about the history of the area.
  • Catch a game or a race with some of the top teams in the country. Watch the Kansas City Chiefs dominate at pro football or the Kansas City Royals hit a few home runs. Soccer fans will enjoy cheering on the Kansas City Current, and race car enthusiasts can catch a race at the Kansas Speedway
  • Watch live theater at The New Theatre & Restaurant, the largest and most successful theater restaurant in the United States. You’ll get to see one of five shows that come to the theater each year, and the 617-seat theater has space for your whole travel party. Get ready to be wowed at this state-of-the-art theater venue.
  • Spend time with animals at the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead. A replica of a working Kansas farm in 1900, the farmstead is meant to give visitors a glimpse at Kansas’ roots. Visit the schoolhouse, barbershop, mining camp and other historic buildings and then pet and feed more than 200 animals on this farm. Admission is $5 per person.
