Show-Me State Cities to Love: Clinton

Michael Moore • February 21, 2025

Located an hour southeast of Kansas City, Clinton, Missouri, has a charming downtown area and lots of wide open space to explore.

Clinton, Missouri, exudes small-town, middle America charm. Originally settled in the mid-1800s, Clinton, located between Kansas City and Springfield on Missouri’s west side, is a town of just about 10,000 residents that boasts a charming town square. The city’s proximity to nearby Truman Lake makes it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts, and its rustic ambiance makes it a great escape from big city life.

Plan a trip to this great Missouri spot for a getaway that is both exciting and fulfilling. Whether you choose to take on the great outdoors or soak up some of the pleasantly old-fashioned vibes Clinton exudes, you’re sure to love the slower pace of this historic town. Stay for a week or a weekend- you’ll have so much fun you won’t want to leave!

Four fun ways to enjoy Clinton, Missouri

  • Have a blast on Truman Lake. You don’t need to be an outdoor enthusiast to enjoy the stunning outdoor scenery surrounding this Lake of the Ozarks-adjacent lake. From swimming to boating and fishing to horseback riding, Truman Lake offers visitors a chance to enjoy its peaceful depths and serene shores in a variety of ways.
  • Stroll along Clinton’s charming, historic downtown square. Missouri’s largest courthouse square, Clinton’s downtown encompasses nearly 10 blocks and 62 buildings, all of which have been preserved. The area is part of the National Register of Historic Places, and the square is a great day to eat, shop and have a great time.
  • Celebrate America by visiting Clinton during the Olde Glory Days festival in July. Head to Clinton in July for a red, white and blue celebration like no other. Get ready for carnival rides, fireworks, lots of food, a parade and so much more. This multi-day event is festive fun for the whole family.
  • Step back in time at the Henry County Museum of Missouri. Closed during the colder months, the Henry County Museum is a great place to visit and learn about the history of the area. Visitors can explore the museum as well as the historical surrounding buildings, including a Dog Trot Log House, an early 1900s village, an old Anheuser Busch building and more.
